Has assured Malawians that government will not let citizens live in fear: Chilima

Vice-President Saulos Chilima has assured Malawians that government will not let citizens live in fear as criminals continue terrorising them.

Speaking during a whistle-stop tour in Thyolo East and Blantyre North constituencies on Saturday, Chilima said government was striving to ensure the Malawi Police Service (MPS) was properly equipped to deal with the increasing crime levels.

“Do not distrust efforts government is putting in place to deal with insecurity and make this country a crime-free nation.

“Everything is under control and this government will not just let criminals go scot-free,” said Chilima.

The Vice-President also asked Malawians to be tolerant of one another in order to maintain peace in the country.

He also applauded members of Parliament (MPs) for passing the 2014/15 National Budget, saying it will facilitate smooth operations of MPS and enable government to fulfill the pledges  Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) made during campaign period for the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

Parliament last week approved K500 million for the police to procure vehicles for rural police stations and posts.

Last month, President Peter Mutharika said he had intelligence information about the existence of an underground gang terrorising the country in an attempt to destabilise his government and directed the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Paul Chibingu to wage war against crime and ensure that every perpetrator is dealt with accordingly.

The President also said government was procuring 50 vehicles to equip the police to effectively patrol the cities and other areas in order to deal with criminals.
